Meet Corina
Selecting a therapist is like finding that perfect pair of jeans…it’s gotta be the right fit!
Looking for a therapist can be just as anxiety provoking, stressful, and unpleasant as what is bringing you to therapy in the first place.
You’ve searched online, read reviews, and are ready to take a gamble on “the perfect fit.” You want a therapist who really gets you, someone who is real, can call you out on your crap, and someone who feels safe to connect with.
I appreciate that you have taken the first steps and are willing to consider me as the perfect fit!
Before I get into specific things about my background, I want to first give you more relevant information for you that will make your decision easier and quicker.
The clients who find the most success in therapy with me are ones who are ready to do the work to experience change. These clients also realize that it’s hard work that gets them the results, not a magic pill or miracle quick fix.
Clients appreciate my honest, straight-forward style, and that I don’t use kid gloves. Therapy with me includes a dash of sarcasm while we dig at root problems and get messy.
Many of my clients have been involved in therapy in the past but were unimpressed with the passive or dismissive therapist. And contrary to what the movies show, you won’t catch me with a nodding head-tilt asking you “and how do you feel about that?”
As fun as it would be to listen to people come into my office and parade around why their life is amazing, the truth is – that doesn’t happen. That’s also not why I became a therapist. People need solutions and guidance from a trusted source, in a place that is safe to be vulnerable. Sounds like a tall order, huh?
What led me to becoming a therapist?
My family history is full of shenanigans, laughter, and pain. To keep this from reading like a dating profile I will give you the highlights: countless moves, separated from family, divorces, more month than money, less than favorable health issues, unexpected changes to life’s direction….but it wasn’t all bad! I have also enjoyed laughing until my belly hurts, traveling, moving to multiple different states, unconditional love (like how people feel about chocolate or ice cream!), several achievements and becoming a mother.
I finally realized my career destiny after becoming a mom. I have always known I wanted to help people, and found my calling after suffering from horrible “advice” from a variety of sources. I was a new mom to a beautiful, yet peculiar baby and needed help. Unfortunately, I received information that was incorrect, scary, and conflicting. Since failure is not in my vocabulary, I became a pain and persisted. Through the anxiety, tears, and frustration, I refused to let the trauma and stress of my situation determine my outcome. Fast forward XX years later (who’s counting?), and now I am fully dedicated to helping adults and children realize their potential by sharing what I have learned.
What kind of therapist am I?
I offer a safe and affirming environment where clients are encouraged to be vulnerable. If you need to scream and cry, be silent and still, or even destroy things, I have the tools and confidence to do all of that. I am honest, focused, straight-forward, and passionate. I enjoy sarcasm and finding the funny in life. This can often be experienced in my use of humor and ‘colorful’ words…..all things my clients are welcome and encouraged to do as well.
I take an active approach in your journey toward unity, where your head and your heart can finally agree!!
Unlike other therapists who attach themselves to a specific theory, I choose to work from an integrative approach. This means I can focus on the client’s needs and goals versus the dictating framework of a theory. I do, however, view life and challenges from an attachment perspective. Since we are all instinctively drawn to connection, if this gets disrupted (especially at young ages), long-term struggles can be seen.
With attachment as my lens, I utilize therapy treatments including EMDR, cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, internal family systems, dialectical behavior therapy, and therapeutic play.
What makes me different?
Here’s where this might start sounding more like a dating profile. Bear with me!
I would like to think that therapists, in general, have a unique skill set and desire to help. While that’s great and all, I am awesome, remember? Here is what sets me apart from the crowd:
I am dedicated to my clients and their needs. This means that I spend hours outside of the therapy session to help coordinate care, advocate, and problem solve. More importantly, I know my job does not end after typical business hours. I am adaptable, allowing me to meet my clients from their perspective and experiences without losing sight of their goals and ways to get them there. I have a confidence that makes it hard to offend me, surprise me, or even scare me. My education and life experiences have taught me to be ready for most anything!
What you can plan on gaining from me:
You will receive therapy that is unique to your needs, struggles, and goals. I also want you to experience:
- More self-esteem and value
- Healthier expectations
- Improved communication and boundaries
- Compassion and forgiveness
- More loving relationships
- The ability to manage trauma as memories, not as ongoing emotional responses
You will finally be free from the unlivable experiences or the out-of-control emotions that offer constant reminders that you are failing. As my client, we will work together because you have suffered alone long enough.
